Adolescent transgender mental health

Featured in this weeks Global news from SOS are mental health issues surrounding adolescent transgender mental health, mood & personality disorders, Mariah Carey on her Bipolar diagnosis & suicidal thoughts amongst the older population.

A study carried out at the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation in Pasadena recently reported their findings in transgender and gender non-conforming children and adolescents. Their research suggests that ‘these individuals may be more likely to develop depression and other mental health conditions.’

Swinburne University of Technology in Australia have today posted an article which examines common misconceptions surrounding mental health illnesses.

They write that there are currently around 300 mental health disorders, many of which share similar features such as anxiety and depression. Often these disorders are reported on inaccurately, promoting the stigma around mental health.

 

Singer Mariah Carey has announced that she was diagnosed with Bipolar ll Disorder in 2001. However, it was 15 years before she decided to seek help for her disorder. Mariah feels strongly about helping to end the stigma surrounding mental health & to encourage open conversation about it.  We wish Mariah all the best.

 

We are aware of the physical vulnerabilities of our older friends and relatives, but how many of us check on their mental health?  The nursing standard reports that an online tool has been launched to help older people worried about their mental health One in five over 65 year olds who live at home suffer with depression whilst an estimated 40% experience it whilst living in a care/residential home according to the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
