Current Home Based Volunteering Opportunities with us

We are always looking for compassionate and kind individuals to join our team behind the scenes.

If you like the sound of working and training from home, helping to make a difference to vulnerable people and being part of a team that really wants to help, then you could be right for SOS.

Our next home based online training opportunity is:

23rd & 24th May 2022. Day 1 will require 3 hours of your time to complete an online manual and Q&A and you can do this at your leisure.   Day2 will require your availability between 10am and 3pm for a zoom discussion.  You must be able to complete both days on the dates given.  Please do not apply for this training if you cannot do both days, thank you.

(Please note, this is initial training only and if you are successful, you will be invited to further training prior to starting with us)

FAQ's

Q: Do I need a DBS certificate and what level of check do I need?

A:  Regardless of the type of volunteering you do for SOS, your DBS must be enhanced. If you do not have a DBS, you will need to apply for one before you can volunteer with us. You can complete our training application form, and train with us if you are invited to do so, but you MUST obtain and produce an enhanced DBS certificate before you can start to volunteer with SOS.

Q:  Where is my volunteering role based?

A:  At all times, you will train and work from the comfort of your own home, there’s no travelling and no traffic jams to worry about!

Q:  Will service users be given my personal number?

A:  No.  All calls come through our 0300 number operated by a 3rd party.  You will be asked to sign up to our telephony portal and download a specific softphone app for use on your device.  Please note, if you’ don’t have good wi-fi, you may be required to use your mobile data.

Q: What happens if I decide my volunteering choice isn’t for me?

A: Support volunteering is not for everyone and we expect people to have a change of heart.  Simply give us as much notice as you can and if there are other opportunities available, feel free to talk to us about placing you elsewhere in the Charity

Q: How many hours a week should I be able to volunteer?

A: For phone volunteers, we require 4 hours a week, which should be 1 x 4hour session.  If you can help pick up spare shifts or cancellations, or provide additional cover, then we can split shifts into 2 hour sessions

Q: If I feel I need additional training, is this available?

A: Yes, ongoing training and refresher training is available, alongside one to one discussions about any concerns or questions you may have.

Q: Do I need previous experience?

A: No, not at all.  Our training will equip you to manage calls and support vulnerable people.  All we ask is that you have an understanding of mental wellbeing and mental ill health and are passionate about helping to make a difference

Q: Will I be paid for volunteering with SOS?

A: No, all our volunteering roles are unpaid and are not employed positions.  Please be sure you understand and are happy with, unpaid volunteering before you apply.

About SOS

SOS is a growing Charity and was originally formed in 2015 as a support group for anyone touched by suicide or poor emotional health.  We became a registered Charity in 2017.

Our services have been adapted in light of the Covid pandemic and our telephone support line, introduced in August 2020 and our email support, introduced in 2021 are the main ways we currently provide assistance for anyone who needs it.

We plan to re-introduce our physical meetings as soon as possible in line with Government advice as well as continuing to work with our corporate partners and other businesses.
