Message from our CEO, Yvette Greenway-Mansfield

Responding to the release of the ONS suicide statistics for 2023…

Reflecting on the 2023 ONS suicide statistics, which show an increase of deaths by suicide in England and Wales, (standing at the highest rate since 1999), I am deeply concerned, and my heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one, at whatever point in time. Each number represents a life lost, an unfinished story, with many more people bereaved. 6069 lives lost. We can, and must, do better.”

“In today’s overwhelming world, it’s important to create an environment where open conversations about mental health are not just accepted but encouraged. We shouldn’t forget that behind every statistic is a person who might be silently struggling. Our collective responsibility, as individuals and businesses, is to create safe spaces where people feel comfortable sharing their struggles and seeking help.”

Here are a few ways we can all contribute to raising awareness and supporting mental health:

  1. Listen and Engage: If you notice a colleague or friend who seems a little down, or perhaps their behaviours have changed, take the time to check in with them. A simple conversation can make a world of difference. Show them that you care and are willing to listen without judgment.
  2. Educate Ourselves: Let’s commit to learning more about mental health issues. Understanding the signs of distress and the support resources available can empower us to more confidently engage with those in need.
  3. Create a Supportive Culture: As a business, we will continue prioritising mental health initiatives, delivering outside the box services such as our mental health mobile hubs, offering resources and support systems that encourage well-being. Please participate and share your ideas on improving workplace culture around mental health.
  4. Break the Stigma: Let’s work together to normalise conversations about mental health. Share your experiences if you feel comfortable; your vulnerability, combined with strength, can encourage others to open up.
  5. Encourage Professional Help: It’s important to remind ourselves and others that seeking help is a sign of strength. We should always feel free to guide those in need toward professional resources.

Together, we can nurture a culture of empathy, understanding, and support. Let’s take proactive steps to ensure that nobody feels they must suffer in silence. Every small action matters; together, we can generate a ripple effect of compassion and change.”

Don’t suffer in silence. We are here to support you. Our freephone helpline 0808 115 1505, is open Monday to Friday from 8 pm to midnight, and Saturday to Sunday from 4 pm to midnight. Our team of highly trained support workers all hold an enhanced DBS certificate, for your added reassurance.

Taken from The Labour Party manifesto ‘….we will reform the NHS to ensure we give mental health the same attention and focus as physical health’ Wes Streeting, please explain how this inspires patients with hope, given the disgraceful waiting times for physical health consultations, let alone those for mental health?’
