Pedalling for Hope: Couple Raise Over £1,600 for SOS Silence of Suicide in London to Brighton Bike Ride
Alongside his wife, he took on the challenge of the iconic London to Brighton Bike Ride to raise vital funds for SOS Silence of Suicide, a charity dedicated to breaking the stigma, silence and shame surrounding mental health and suicide, and supporting families and individuals affected by suicide.
The couple set out with a modest target of £250. However, thanks to the incredible generosity of friends, family, and well-wishers, they raised £1,300 plus £300 in Gift Aid, a total of over £1,600 for the cause.
From the very start of the ride, their effort made an impact. At 6am, before their wheels had even turned, a woman approached to share how deeply the cause resonated with her, having lost her partner to suicide 15 years ago. “It is great that you want to get the message out there!” she told them – a powerful reminder of how far-reaching the pain of suicide is, and why raising awareness matters so much.
Speaking after the event, Stewart and his wife Claire shared:
“What a great day. We had so many conversations about the charity and what it does. Entrants and supporters wished us good luck and gave us thumbs up for the charity. Even though the hills were tough, we rode together, kept going, and knew we were making a difference.”
The ride was not just about endurance, but about connection, hope, and showing that out of grief, something positive can grow. SOS Silence of Suicide is incredibly grateful to the couple for their courage and commitment, and to every supporter who helped turn a £250 target into a lifeline of over £1,600.
Jasmine Nisbett-Gordon, Events and Fundraising Manager at SOS Silence of Suicide, said:
“Every story of fundraising in memory of a loved one is deeply moving, and this ride is no exception. To honour a brother lost to suicide in this way is a powerful act of love. The funds raised will help us continue to support families and individuals living with the impact of suicide, and we are so thankful for the strength and compassion shown.”
The couple already has their eyes on their next challenge: a 24-hour endurance relay run planned for 2026, proving that their journey of remembrance and hope has only just begun.
If Stewart and Claire’s journey has inspired you, why not take on your own fundraiser? No idea is too small, and no effort goes unnoticed. Together, we can help ensure that no one has to face mental health struggles or suicide in silence.
