Michael Mansfield QC is proud to be speaking at the Potteries Science Festival next month and will be discussing the good, bad and ugly features of a national DNA database.

Yvette Greenway will speak briefly about the work of SOS Silence of Suicide and reflecting upon the mental wellbeing synergies between the two organisations.

SOS Silence of Suicide are delighted to have their work recognised by PSF, in particular Rob Beardmore Professor of Mathematical Biosciences, University of Exeter, who has put together this outstanding event, whose aims and purposes are detailed below and which runs on 3rd and 4th July 2017 in Stoke on Trent.

The purpose of the Potteries Science Festival and “We Are The Alchemists” is
is to talk about the impact science has on the lives of people living in the Stoke-on-Trent area.
One problem Stoke has is this: parents don’t necessarily see universities as being relevant because of financial, employment and even class-based issues. Moreover, many would-be students have no role models in their family whowent to university. We are trying to break down some of these barriers and Keele University, Staffordshire University, Wavemaker, Stoke city council, many local schools, the museums, and others further afield like
Exeter University, are actively involved through a group called “SASCAL” that comprises members from within these institutions. Our long-term goal is to fund sustained SASCAL activity, our immediate goal is for SASCALto create a buzz around science, and the arts that connect with science, in Stoke-on-Trent.

For more details on this critical community event, which aims to put the ‘WOW’ factor into science, please go the website: https://mmems.org/potteries/

We are very much looking forward to meeting the local community in Stoke on Trent and urge as many of you to attend as possible for what will be an enlightening and interesting couple of days.
